NEW DELHI: Team India faced a crushing 26-run defeat in the third Test at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, resulting in a historic 0-3 series whitewash against New Zealand. This defeat marks a significant milestone as New Zealand becomes the first team to secure a comprehensive series victory against India on Indian soil.

In 2024, India has played 11 Test matches, with four losses occurring on home turf. Captain Rohit Sharma now shares an undesirable record with former captain MAK Pataudi for the most home Test losses in a calendar year, both having been at the helm for four home defeats.

During Pataudi’s leadership in 1969, India suffered one loss to New Zealand and three to Australia. Rohit’s first loss of 2024 came against England in the Hyderabad Test from January 25 to 28. After six successive wins, India unexpectedly faced three consecutive defeats against New Zealand, including an 8-wicket loss in Bengaluru, a 113-run setback in Pune, and the most recent 26-run loss in Mumbai.

With five home Test losses, Rohit now ranks second among Indian captains for the most home defeats, behind only MAK Pataudi, who holds the record with nine. In comparison, former captain Virat Kohli experienced only three Test losses at home during his tenure.

In light of this disappointing series, India’s focus now shifts to the upcoming five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia. This crucial tour will test India’s resolve and determine if they can bounce back from their recent struggles, especially with a spot in the World Test Championship final at stake.
