You are currently viewing Who Is Shamsud-Din Jabbar, US Army Veteran and Suspect in New Orleans Attack?

Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old US Army veteran and real estate agent from Texas, is the suspect in the deadly New Orleans attack that claimed at least 15 lives and left dozens injured. A former military service member who served as a human resource and IT specialist, Jabbar was reportedly deployed to Afghanistan and served in the Army Reserve until 2020.

Before the attack, Jabbar had been struggling financially and was going through a divorce, having previously shared in an email to his wife’s lawyer that his real estate company had suffered heavy losses. Despite his past troubles, his brother described him as a kind and intelligent individual who had converted to Islam at a young age. However, the recent act of violence is believed to be linked to his radicalization, not his religious beliefs.

The FBI noted that, hours before the attack, Jabbar posted videos online expressing admiration for ISIS. The presence of a black flag associated with the terror group was found in the vehicle he used for the attack. After crashing his vehicle into a crowd of New Year’s revelers, Jabbar allegedly opened fire before being killed in a shootout with the police.
