Donald Trump is reportedly leaning toward appointing Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State for his potential second term, bypassing Indian-American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, according to recent reports. Rubio, a loyal supporter of Trump’s 2024 campaign, would make history as the first Latino Secretary of State if selected.
Rubio, who has represented Florida in the Senate since 2011, was previously considered a potential running mate for Trump in the 2024 election. Known for his strong stance on foreign policy, Rubio has been a prominent voice on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Committee on Foreign Relations. Although initially a vocal supporter of Ukraine, Rubio recently opposed a $61 billion aid bill, citing concerns over U.S. immigration priorities.
In contrast, Ramaswamy, a former presidential candidate who backed Trump after suspending his campaign, has hinted at a possible role in the Trump administration. During an interview on ABC’s This Week, he suggested multiple options were under consideration. Speculation suggests he might lead the Department of Homeland Security or possibly pursue a Senate seat in Ohio if Vice President-elect J.D. Vance vacates it.
Meanwhile, Trump’s cabinet appointments have attracted attention for their alignment with his policy views, notably with key positions such as National Security Advisor and EPA head already filled. If Ramaswamy is left out, he would join Nikki Haley, another Indian-American MAGA supporter, who reportedly will not have a role in Trump’s new administration due to her past critical comments about Trump.
