Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump have both expressed openness to resuming diplomatic talks following Trump’s victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. During his speech at the Valdai Forum in Sochi, Putin congratulated Trump on his electoral win, where he defeated Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris. Putin, when asked about future discussions with the newly elected president, responded with a straightforward, “Ready,” signaling his willingness to engage with the U.S. under Trump’s leadership.

Trump, for his part, confirmed his readiness to speak with world leaders, including Putin, stating, “I think we’ll speak.” He further shared that since his victory, he had likely spoken to about 70 global leaders, though he had not yet spoken directly with Putin, despite the Russian leader’s earlier lighthearted remark suggesting he preferred Harris to win.

The relationship between Trump and Putin has been a subject of both intrigue and controversy. Putin has been seen as supportive of Trump’s anti-establishment rhetoric and the disruption he caused in the traditional global order. Journalist Bob Woodward’s new book reveals that Trump and Putin maintained a secretive communication channel during President Biden’s tenure, with the two reportedly holding up to seven undisclosed conversations. Additionally, Trump is said to have sent limited COVID-19 testing supplies to Russia while in office, further complicating the narrative of their relationship.

The Kremlin has long been accused of attempting to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election in favor of Trump, a claim Russia has consistently denied. However, the allegations of interference have contributed to a strained view of their connection within the broader international community.

In his remarks at the Valdai Forum, Putin also lauded Trump’s actions following an assassination attempt during a rally earlier in the year. “He turned out to be a courageous person,” Putin said, emphasizing that such moments reveal a person’s true character. “People show who they are in extraordinary circumstances. This is where a person reveals himself. In my opinion, he conducted himself in a very admirable and courageous manner.

As both leaders signal a potential return to dialogue, the international community will be watching closely to see how U.S.-Russia relations evolve under Trump’s second presidency, especially amid continued tensions over geopolitical issues and global security.
