PM Modi Embarks on 5-Day Tour to Nigeria, Brazil, and Guyana

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his five-day trip to Nigeria, Brazil, and Guyana on Saturday, emphasizing the importance of strengthening strategic ties and participating in global discussions.

The prime minister expressed anticipation for “meaningful” discussions during the 19th G20 Summit in Brazil, building on India’s successful G20 presidency last year. He highlighted that India’s efforts had elevated the bloc to a “people’s G20” and mainstreamed the priorities of the Global South.

“In Brazil, I will attend the 19th G20 Summit as a troika member. Brazil has built upon India’s legacy. I look forward to discussions that align with our vision of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future,'” Modi stated.

The summit, to be held in Rio de Janeiro on November 18-19, will see global leaders like Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden in attendance.

Strengthening Ties with Nigeria

Modi’s visit to Nigeria on November 16-17, at the invitation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will focus on enhancing the strategic partnership between the two nations.

“This visit is an opportunity to build upon our shared belief in democracy and pluralism,” Modi noted, adding that he is excited to meet the Indian community in Nigeria, who have sent him warm messages in Hindi.

Historic Visit to Guyana

In the final leg of his trip, from November 19-21, Modi will visit Guyana, marking the first trip by an Indian prime minister to the country in over 50 years.

“We will explore ways to give strategic direction to our unique relationship, rooted in shared heritage, culture, and values,” Modi said. He also plans to pay respects to the Indian diaspora in Guyana, who migrated over 185 years ago, and address their Parliament as a symbol of democratic collaboration.

India’s Legacy in the G20

During India’s presidency last year, significant milestones included the induction of the 55-nation African Union as a permanent G20 member and a unified leaders’ declaration despite divisions over the Ukraine conflict.

“This year, Brazil has built upon India’s legacy,” Modi stated, reaffirming India’s commitment to the G20’s objectives and the broader vision of global unity and sustainable development.
