Colombo: Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s National People’s Power (NPP) coalition achieved a resounding victory in snap legislative elections, final results confirmed Friday. Dissanayake, a self-proclaimed Marxist who assumed the presidency in September, campaigned on a platform of eradicating corruption, recovering stolen assets, and rebuilding Sri Lanka’s economy. His coalition claimed 123 of the 225 seats in parliament, with an unprecedented 62% of the vote. The main opposition, led by Sajith Premadasa, trailed far behind with just 18%.
