US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told a senior Israeli official on Monday that Israel’s efforts to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza must lead to tangible improvements on the ground. This statement followed a letter from Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin sent on October 13, which outlined specific actions Israel needed to take to address the worsening humanitarian crisis amid ongoing conflict. The U.S. gave Israel 30 days to comply, stating that the results on the ground would determine if Israel had met the necessary steps.
During Monday’s meeting, Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer briefed Blinken on the measures Israel had taken, including operational adjustments by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Blinken emphasized the importance of ensuring these changes resulted in actual improvements, particularly in the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Meanwhile, international aid groups have criticized Israel, stating that not only has it failed to meet U.S. demands, but its actions have exacerbated the humanitarian situation. The ongoing Israeli military operations in northern Gaza have resulted in widespread displacement and have surrounded hospitals and shelters, actions Israel claims are aimed at disrupting Hamas operations.
