US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he will sign an executive order to begin the construction of the ‘Iron Dome’ missile defense system in the United States. This is in fulfillment of a campaign promise he made during the presidential election.

The Iron Dome, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries, is a mobile air defense system designed to intercept and destroy short-range rockets and artillery shells that are fired towards populated areas.

Its effectiveness has been demonstrated numerous times, particularly in the Israel-Hamas conflict since October 2023, and during Iranian missile strikes on Israel in October 2024.

“We must start building a state-of-the-art Iron Dome missile defense shield immediately,” Trump said during a Republican congressional retreat in Miami, coinciding with the first day of his new Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, taking office.

Hegseth, as he arrived at the Pentagon, mentioned that his first day would be packed with additional executive orders, including those related to the removal of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies from the Pentagon, as well as reinstating troops dismissed due to Covid-19 mandates, alongside the swift implementation of the Iron Dome for America.

How Iron Dome Works

Iron Dome is designed to protect civilian populations from incoming missile threats, especially in areas with limited warning time. The system works by detecting incoming projectiles, tracking their trajectory, and determining whether they will strike a populated area or critical infrastructure. If the threat is confirmed, the system fires interceptor missiles to destroy the incoming projectiles in mid-air before they can reach their target.

The system has proven highly effective in saving lives, particularly in conflicts involving rocket attacks from groups like Hamas in Gaza. Since its deployment in 2011, Iron Dome has been an essential element of Israel’s defense strategy, with a high success rate in intercepting threats.
