Two explosions rocked Brazil’s Supreme Court on Wednesday evening, resulting in the death of one man and prompting a full evacuation of the justices and staff. The blasts occurred around 7:30 p.m. local time, shortly after the day’s court session concluded.

According to a statement from the court, both explosions were powerful, and fortunately, all staff and judges were safely evacuated following the incident. Local authorities confirmed the death of one individual at the scene, though his identity has not been released.

Witnesses reported a 20-second interval between the two explosions, which took place in the Three Powers Plaza in Brasília, a key area housing Brazil’s Supreme Court, Congress, and the presidential palace.

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was not at the presidential palace during the incident, and a spokesperson confirmed that security forces were sweeping the area. The police have cordoned off the site, and federal police are investigating the explosions, though no motive has been disclosed.

The Supreme Court has been a frequent target of threats from far-right groups and Bolsonaro supporters, particularly due to its efforts to combat disinformation. Justice Alexandre de Moraes, in particular, has been a focal point of their anger.

Another explosion was reported outside Brazil’s Congress, but it caused no significant damage.
