Crowds Gather in Vikravandi as Vijay’s Political Journey Officially Begins

Before dawn, a sea of people began streaming into Vikravandi, arriving by foot, bike, bus, and train in groups of tens, hundreds, and thousands. Tamil superstar Vijay’s much-anticipated political debut with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) had electrified the atmosphere, with a buzz rivaling the opening of a blockbuster film.

For Vijay’s fans, this was no ordinary rally—it was the beginning of a new chapter for their idol, marking his formal foray into politics. An estimated 300,000 supporters from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and other South Indian states were expected to attend, placing Vijay in the political lineage of cinematic legends like M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), J. Jayalalithaa, and Kamal Haasan.

At 49, Vijay stands at a strategic crossroads—young enough to resonate with first-time voters yet seasoned enough to garner respect from traditional constituents. His rally attracted an overwhelmingly youthful crowd, with 70-80% of attendees in their 20s. This mirrored Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party rally, where cinematic charisma met political aspiration. While Chiranjeevi’s party ultimately merged with the Congress, Vijay hopes to avoid a similar fate as he faces the challenge of maintaining momentum in the 18 months leading up to Tamil Nadu’s assembly elections.

Filling the Political Vacuum

Vijay’s political entry comes at a time when Tamil Nadu’s political landscape is in flux. With the AIADMK still recovering from Jayalalithaa’s demise and the ruling DMK undergoing a generational shift, Vijay appears poised to occupy the space left by the two dominant Dravidian parties. His appeal lies in his ability to connect with disillusioned youth and unaligned voters, who make up 20-30% of the electorate.

Unlike veterans like Kamal Haasan or Rajinikanth, Vijay lacks a defined political ideology or the backing of established political figures. However, his star power and the goodwill fostered through his fan club-turned-political platform, Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (VMI), provide a solid foundation. Over the years, VMI’s community initiatives, such as blood donation drives and educational programs, have built significant social capital, now channeled into TVK’s political machinery.

A Grand Stage in Vikravandi

The Vikravandi rally was nothing short of a logistical marvel. Organizers spared no effort, arranging over 60,000 chairs, setting up caravans for TVK leaders, and reportedly spending ₹50 crore on the event. The streets leading to the venue were lined with towering cutouts of Dravidian icons like Periyar and B.R. Ambedkar, alongside Vijay’s striking, youthful image. The 100-km stretch from Chennai to Vikravandi was adorned with banners and posters, creating a festive atmosphere.

The party anthem, “Tamizhan Kodi Parakuthu… Thalaivan Yugam Porakuthu” (The Tamil flag flies high… A leader’s era has begun), evoked nostalgia for MGR’s rise while signaling Vijay’s vision for a modern Tamil Nadu. Themes of inclusivity, Tamil pride, and progressive issues like education and environmental concerns dominated his messaging, aiming to bridge traditional Dravidian values with contemporary challenges.

The Challenges Ahead

While Vijay’s entry has generated excitement, the path ahead is fraught with challenges. Many film stars have struggled to translate their popularity into lasting political influence. Vijayakanth’s Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam eventually faded, Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam failed to gain traction, and Rajinikanth’s political ambitions never fully materialized.

Currently, TVK lacks the experienced political strategists who supported leaders like MGR and Jayalalithaa or even guided Vijayakanth during his initial political foray. Building a credible party structure, mobilizing resources, and maintaining momentum will be critical for Vijay as he transitions from the silver screen to the political arena.

Despite these challenges, Vijay’s fans remain unwavering in their support, many funding their own travel to attend the rally. For them, this is more than politics—it’s a personal journey with a leader they revere. As Vijay takes his first steps in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, the question remains: can he turn his cinematic stardom into enduring political power?
