AAP and BJP Clash Over Arvind Kejriwal’s Security Amid Delhi Assembly Polls
As the Delhi Assembly election approaches, a fierce clash has erupted between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the withdrawal of Punjab Police’s additional security cover for AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal.
The Punjab Police, under AAP’s governance, had been providing extra security to Mr. Kejriwal alongside his Z+ protection detail managed by Delhi Police. However, this additional security was withdrawn following a complaint from Delhi Police to the Election Commission. Punjab Police chief Gaurav Yadav confirmed the withdrawal, stating that any potential threats would be communicated to Delhi authorities.
Arvind Kejriwal’s existing Z+ protection includes 63 officers, CAPF personnel, and specialized security arrangements. The Punjab Police’s added security had been over and above these measures.
Political Accusations and Security Concerns
The withdrawal has triggered sharp exchanges between AAP and BJP. The BJP downplayed the issue, questioning whether Delhi Police was incapable of ensuring Kejriwal’s safety. Conversely, AAP accused the BJP, which oversees Delhi Police through the Union Home Ministry, of endangering Kejriwal’s life.
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing them of “playing with Kejriwal’s life” and called the Election Commission a “mute spectator.” Kejriwal himself alleged an attack on his car in Hari Nagar, linking it to the BJP and the removal of Punjab Police’s security.
BJP’s Response
BJP leader Parvesh Verma dismissed AAP’s claims as “drama,” accusing Kejriwal of seeking sympathy votes. Verma had earlier raised concerns about Punjab Police personnel campaigning for AAP candidates in Delhi, which he claimed violated electoral norms.
Delhi vs Punjab Police Tensions
The controversy has also highlighted coordination issues between Delhi and Punjab Police. Letters were exchanged, with Delhi Police emphasizing the need for protocol adherence by Punjab VIPs visiting the capital, including sharing route details and personnel deployment. Punjab Police reiterated their commitment to Election Commission guidelines.
Upcoming Delhi Assembly Election
The high-stakes Delhi Assembly election is scheduled for February 5, with results on February 8. AAP aims for a third consecutive win, while the BJP is determined to challenge Kejriwal’s dominance in the national capital.
