Jharkhand Phase 1 Elections Commence, Priyanka Gandhi Faces Key By-Election Challenge in Wayanad

The first phase of Jharkhand’s assembly elections has officially begun, with 43 out of 81 seats up for grabs. At the same time, by-elections are taking place across 10 states, including the high-profile Wayanad Lok Sabha by-election in Kerala, which is seen as a crucial test for Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Key Points:

  1. As of 9 a.m., voter turnout for the 43 seats in Jharkhand stands at 13%.
  2. By-elections are being held for 31 assembly seats across 10 states, alongside the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat. Among the assembly seats, four are reserved for Scheduled Castes, and six for Scheduled Tribes.
  3. The by-elections cover seven seats in Rajasthan, six in West Bengal, five in Assam, four in Bihar, three in Kerala, two in Madhya Pradesh, and one seat each in Meghalaya, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, and Karnataka. In Sikkim, two candidates from the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha were declared unopposed winners on October 30.
  4. In Jharkhand, the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has fielded 23 candidates, with allies Congress nominating 17 and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) five. The BJP has put forward 36 candidates, Janata Dal United (JDU) two, and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) seven.
  5. Notable candidates in Jharkhand include former Chief Minister Champai Soren, his son Babulal Soren, former Chief Minister Arjun Munda’s wife Meera Munda, Geeta Koda (wife of Madhu Koda), and Purnima Sahu (daughter-in-law of Raghuvar Das).
  6. The JMM-led alliance is seeking a second term, highlighting welfare programs like the Maiyan Samman Yojana, while the BJP-led NDA is focusing on issues such as infiltration, corruption, and security.
  7. Key BJP promises include taking action on infiltration, implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), providing ₹2,100 per month to every woman, and creating 500,000 jobs for the youth.
  8. The BJP’s campaign has been supported by several top leaders, including PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP President JP Nadda, and Chief Ministers Yogi Adityanath (Uttar Pradesh) and Himanta Biswa Sarma (Assam).
  9. In the 2019 elections, the JMM secured 30 seats, while the BJP won 25, down from 37 in 2014. The JMM-Congress-RJD alliance won a clear majority with 47 seats.
  10. The second phase of voting in Jharkhand is set for November 20, with results to be announced on November 23.
