The ongoing rivalry between former BJP MLA from Laksar, Kunwar Pranav Singh Champion, and Independent MLA from Khanpur, Umesh Kumar, erupted into violence on Sunday in Roorkee. Both leaders, along with their supporters, allegedly attacked each other’s offices, used abusive language, and brandished pistols, escalating their political feud to dangerous levels.
What happened?
According to Haridwar SSP Pramendra Singh Doval, both Champion and Kumar have been detained following complaints from both parties. The decades-old animosity between the two has often played out on social media, but this time it spilled into the streets. Champion was taken to the Ranipur police station, while Kumar was detained at the Roorkee police station.
“A recommendation is being sent to the district magistrate to cancel their licensed pistols and review their security arrangements,” Doval said, emphasizing that no one is above the law.
Champion’s version
Speaking to reporters from inside a police van, Champion accused Kumar of attacking his residence in Landhaura on Saturday night and using abusive language. He claimed his actions on Sunday were in retaliation. “What I did was a reaction to protect my honor. I have been unfairly targeted, but I will fight this injustice,” he said.
Champion’s wife, Devyani Singh, added that they had lodged a police complaint about the alleged attack on their home the previous night but received no response, leaving them no choice but to act.
What unfolded on Sunday?
On Sunday evening, Champion, accompanied by dozens of supporters, allegedly caused a ruckus at Kumar’s Roorkee office and fired multiple shots into the air. In retaliation, Kumar and his supporters stormed Champion’s office, with Kumar allegedly brandishing a pistol while shouting threats. The police intervened to prevent further escalation.
Kumar accused Champion of using abusive language about his family on social media two days prior, which he said triggered his reaction. A video of Kumar abusing Champion at his Landhaura residence on Saturday night has also gone viral on social media.
