Devendra Fadnavis Assures Stability and Change After Swearing in as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister

After taking the oath as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister for the third time, Devendra Fadnavis addressed the media on Thursday evening, expressing his unwavering commitment to delivering a stable and progressive government over the next five years. He promised that his leadership would focus on bringing about meaningful change, emphasizing that the government’s agenda would prioritize development over any political vendettas.

A Shifting Political Landscape in Maharashtra

Maharashtra’s political scene has undergone several dramatic transformations since the 2019 state assembly elections. Following the breakup of the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, a coalition of Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress, was formed. However, the political dynamics shifted again in 2022 when Eknath Shinde’s rebellion led to the Shiv Sena split, bringing down the MVA government. Shinde, aligning with the BJP, became the Chief Minister. Following the results of the recent Maharashtra elections, Devendra Fadnavis returned to the CM office on December 5.

Reflecting on the turbulent political changes from 2019 to mid-2022, Fadnavis expressed hope that Maharashtra would not face such shocks in the future. He reiterated his vision for the state, stressing that under his leadership, the politics of Maharashtra would be focused on “change, not revenge,” signaling his intent to steer the administration toward transparent, people-centric governance with an emphasis on rapid development.

Political Leadership and Parliamentary Procedures

When questioned about the Leader of Opposition (LoP) position in the Maharashtra assembly, Fadnavis clarified that the decision would rest with the newly elected speaker, not the government. He pointed out the similarity with the Lok Sabha, where the largest party leader is given significant powers despite not meeting the numerical threshold for the LoP position.

Regarding key ministerial portfolios such as home and finance, Fadnavis refrained from providing specific details but reassured that these critical departments would remain with the government. He also dismissed rumors that Eknath Shinde was upset about not being reappointed as CM, stating that Shinde had immediately agreed to join the government, reinforcing that all leadership roles within the cabinet are essential for ensuring smooth governance.

Continuity and Focus on Development

Looking ahead, Fadnavis noted that while his role had changed from serving as Deputy Chief Minister under Shinde to assuming the Chief Minister’s office, the focus and direction of the government remained unchanged. His administration would continue to prioritize growth, transparency, and inclusivity.

On the Ladki Bahin Yojana, a welfare scheme for women, Fadnavis assured that the government would honor the pre-poll commitment to increase the monthly stipend from ₹1,500 to ₹2,100 for eligible women, reaffirming his administration’s focus on social welfare.

Key Developments and Cabinet Expansion

Fadnavis also announced that the election of the new assembly speaker would take place on December 9, during a special three-day session starting on December 7 in Mumbai. The new cabinet, which includes Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, will be expanded before the winter session in Nagpur later this month, marking the beginning of a new phase of governance in Maharashtra.

As Maharashtra enters this new political chapter under Fadnavis’ leadership, the focus will be on restoring stability and ensuring that the promises made during the election campaign are fulfilled. With an emphasis on development and unity, Fadnavis aims to navigate the state through the challenges ahead while fostering a forward-looking government.
