Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi secured victory in the Kalkaji constituency in the assembly election on Saturday, defeating Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Lok Sabha MP Ramesh Bidhuri by 3,500 votes.
The contest in Kalkaji was intense, with Bidhuri initially leading as the Election Commission of India began counting votes. However, Atishi gained momentum in the later rounds, ultimately emerging victorious.
Atishi, a senior AAP leader, has played a significant role in shaping the party’s policies. She assumed office as Delhi’s Chief Minister in September 2024 following Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation, becoming the youngest person to hold the post at 43.
Seeking re-election from Kalkaji in 2025, Atishi aimed to reinforce AAP’s governance model and further her reform-driven agenda. Since joining AAP in 2013, she has been deeply involved in policy advocacy and grassroots activism, particularly in education and governance reforms.
Her political journey has seen both challenges and triumphs. In 2019, she contested the East Delhi Lok Sabha seat but lost to BJP’s Gautam Gambhir. However, she made a strong comeback in the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, winning the Kalkaji seat by a margin of over 11,000 votes.
Beyond electoral politics, Atishi has also been a vocal advocate for social movements. She was actively involved in the Jal Satyagraha movement in Madhya Pradesh in 2015, fighting for water rights alongside activist Alok Agarwal.
Her latest victory in Kalkaji reaffirms her growing influence in Delhi politics, solidifying her position as one of AAP’s key leaders.
