Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi on Monday urged Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta to fulfill Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promise of depositing ₹2500 per month into the accounts of women in the national capital.
As the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Atishi claimed she had been requesting a meeting with Gupta for two days but received no response. Eventually, AAP leaders confronted her on the assembly floor.
“For two days, we sought an appointment with the chief minister, but we were denied. Today, we met Rekha Gupta ji during the session and reminded her of the promise made in the first cabinet meeting—the guarantee given by Modi ji. That promise has not been kept, and that guarantee has turned out to be false. We expect the first installment of ₹2500 under the Mahila Samman Yojana to be credited into every Delhi woman’s account on March 8,” Atishi told ANI.
In response, Rekha Gupta alleged on Sunday that the previous AAP government had drained the public exchequer before the BJP assumed power. She assured that the women’s payment scheme would be implemented after a thorough financial assessment.
“When we reviewed the financial status with officials, we found that the treasury was empty due to the previous government’s mismanagement,” Gupta stated.
Atishi, however, dismissed these claims, arguing that AAP had left behind a financially stable administration. She accused the BJP of making excuses to avoid delivering on its commitments.
“The BJP government was expected to start justifying its failure to meet its guarantees from day one. These claims about empty coffers are nothing but an attempt to evade responsibility,” she remarked.
The BJP recently returned to power in Delhi, securing 48 out of 70 seats in the assembly elections held earlier this month.
