Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has accused the opposition of misleading the public about the BJP’s stance on mosques and Waqf properties. In an interview with ANI, he questioned the opposition’s motives, alleging that Waqf properties have been misused for personal gain rather than public welfare.
He dismissed claims that the BJP intends to take over mosques, stating, “What will BJP do by taking over Masjids? The opposition is spreading misinformation. Have they undertaken any welfare initiatives using Waqf properties? They have misused them, sold them multiple times, and created disputes.”
Adityanath emphasized that the BJP’s goal is to protect Waqf properties from encroachment and misuse, ensuring they benefit the community. He also supported the proposed Waqf Amendment, arguing that it is necessary for transparency and national welfare.
He criticized the Waqf Board, alleging that it has misused its authority to claim lands without justification. “They blackmail governments and seize properties in the name of Waqf. Who gave them the power to take over any land?” he questioned.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has opposed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, calling it unconstitutional and an attempt to take over Muslim properties. However, the government maintains that the bill seeks to introduce transparency, digitization, and legal mechanisms to prevent illegal occupation of Waqf properties.
