Heavy Rainfall Set to Return to Northern Tamil Nadu Next Week: IMD Issues Yellow Alert

Chennai: After a brief respite, northern Tamil Nadu is bracing for another round of heavy rainfall next week, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Chennai and several surrounding districts. The alert warns of intense rainfall, ranging from 6 cm to 12 cm within a 24-hour period, expected to occur on November 27 and 28. The rain will be triggered by a developing low-pressure system over the southeast Bay of Bengal, which is predicted to intensify into a depression within two days. IMD officials have indicated that the system is not expected to develop into a cyclone at this stage.

Weather Warnings:

  • November 26: Heavy rain (yellow alert) could begin in Kancheepuram and Chengalpet, with varying rainfall intensities expected across districts like Tiruvallur, as well as other parts of northern Tamil Nadu.
  • November 27-28: A stronger weather system will bring widespread rain, with districts such as Villupuram and Mayiladuthurai on orange alert for heavy rain. The southern coastal regions, including the delta, will experience intense downpours. Ten districts, including Tiruvallur and Nagapattinam, will face heavy rainfall under the yellow alert.

Regional Weather Forecast: N. Senthamarai Kannan, director of the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre at IMD, explained that the evolving system’s development will become clearer once the low-pressure area forms, but current observations suggest it will not intensify into a cyclone. The IMD has issued weather alerts for districts ranging from Cuddalore to Ramanathapuram, with varied intensities of rainfall expected.

Chennai’s Weather Outlook: Chennai is likely to experience early morning haze followed by partly cloudy skies on November 23. Daytime temperatures will range between 31-32°C, while the night will see lows between 23-24°C.

Rainfall Impact: The upcoming rainfall will significantly contribute to the city’s seasonal totals, with Chennai having recorded 55 cm of rainfall since October 1, just slightly below the average. Tamil Nadu as a whole has experienced 33 cm of rainfall, which is 5% above normal. Weather blogger Pradeep John pointed out that the forthcoming rain will push the rainfall totals in both Chennai and surrounding districts from deficit to surplus, providing relief to areas that have seen lower-than-expected rainfall earlier in the season.

Residents and authorities are being urged to stay alert as the rainfall begins to intensify, particularly in the coastal and delta regions of Tamil Nadu.
