Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh:
With Maha Kumbh 2025 just around the corner, Indian Railways is setting an example of exceptional planning and execution to handle one of the world’s largest human gatherings. Western Railway’s launch of 98 special trains is part of a broader strategy to ensure that the journey for millions of devotees is as sacred and fulfilling as the event itself.

Ajay Solanki, PRO of Ahmedabad Division Railway, noted that detailed preparations have gone beyond just basic amenities. “We’re leveraging technology and manpower to ensure a hassle-free experience. Dedicated helplines have been set up at key stations, and volunteers will assist elderly pilgrims and those with disabilities to board trains safely,” he said. He added that onboard catering and medical facilities are being enhanced to provide additional support during the long journeys.

Beyond the logistical achievements of Western Railway, Indian Railways has expanded its services nationwide. A staggering 800 additional ticket counters have been opened at major stations to handle the surge in demand. For tech-savvy travelers, a dedicated mobile app has been introduced to provide real-time updates on train schedules, platform information, and crowd levels at stations, ensuring smoother coordination.

Innovative crowd management techniques are also being adopted. At Prayagraj Junction, artificial intelligence-based crowd monitoring systems will be implemented for the first time, enabling authorities to respond instantly to overcrowding or emergencies. Over 10,000 CCTV cameras have been installed across stations, and drone surveillance will add an extra layer of security.

The Maha Kumbh, expected to draw over 45 crore devotees from India and abroad, is not just a spiritual event but also a cultural extravaganza. Temporary exhibition spaces have been set up near Prayagraj’s key stations to showcase India’s diverse heritage, art, and traditions. Visitors will also have access to curated food stalls offering regional delicacies from across the country, providing a taste of India’s rich culinary diversity.

Key bathing dates, including January 14 (Makar Sankranti), January 29 (Mauni Amavasya), and February 3 (Basant Panchami), are expected to see a massive influx of pilgrims. To accommodate this, Indian Railways has doubled the staff at ticket counters, waiting areas, and platforms on these critical dates. Additionally, free Wi-Fi is being extended to temporary holding areas, allowing pilgrims to stay connected with their families during their journey.

The role of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) has been significantly enhanced. Female RPF officers, as part of “Shakti Teams,” will be deployed to ensure the safety of women travelers. Emergency medical booths, equipped with defibrillators and staffed by trained paramedics, are being strategically placed across stations and platforms.

Indian Railways is also focusing on sustainability. Temporary waiting areas and facilities for pilgrims are being built using eco-friendly materials. Special “green corridors” have been introduced to ensure that waste generated during the event is efficiently managed, keeping the stations and tracks clean.

As the Maha Kumbh approaches, Indian Railways’ preparations are shaping up to create not only a seamless travel experience but also a reflection of India’s ability to blend spirituality with modernity. With state-of-the-art technology, cultural showcases, and unmatched hospitality, the Maha Kumbh 2025 promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for devotees and visitors alike.
