Sukhbir Singh Badal, leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), expressed profound gratitude towards two Punjab Police personnel who saved his life during a shooting attack on Wednesday. After meeting and embracing the assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) who had neutralized the attacker, Sukhbir Badal shared his appreciation for their heroism.
On X (formerly Twitter), Badal posted photos of ASIs Jasbir Singh and Hira Singh, members of his security detail. He wrote, “Risking your life to save someone is not easy. ASI Jasbir Singh and ASI Hira Singh have been part of our family since the days of Sabah. My family and I can never repay their courage and loyalty. May God bless them with a long life, good health, and happiness.”
The attack took place near the Golden Temple’s entrance when Narain Singh Chaura, a former Khalistani terrorist, fired at Sukhbir Badal at close range. Fortunately, the shot missed as plainclothes police officers quickly subdued the assailant.
Amritsar Police Commissioner Bhullar stated that authorities are investigating the incident, exploring whether any group was involved or if it was an isolated attempt to “gain sympathy.”
How Officers Saved Badal’s Life
ASI Jasbir Singh, sensing the imminent threat, acted swiftly by rushing toward the shooter, grabbing his hands, and pushing him away. With help from other officers, the attacker was overpowered. The dramatic moment was captured on camera by media personnel covering Badal’s sewa (religious service) at the Golden Temple.
Chaura, who attempted the assassination during Badal’s penance for alleged past wrongs, was remanded to three-day police custody on Thursday.
Investigation Into the Attack
Preliminary police investigations suggest that Chaura, acting alone, was “self-motivated” to carry out the attack. Though there are still questions about the potential involvement of other parties, Chaura’s motives appear linked to the Akal Takht’s verdict on Badal in the Bargari sacrilege case.
The 9mm pistol used in the attack had no serial numbers, and police are examining whether Chaura brought it into the shrine or acquired it shortly before the shooting.
CCTV footage released by SAD leaders raised further concerns, showing Chaura interacting with Superintendent of Police (SP) Harpal Singh, who was in charge of security at the shrine, the day before the attack.
The attempted assassination sparked outrage across the political spectrum. The Congress party criticized the Punjab government for lapses in security, while the BJP condemned the incident as a “total breakdown of law and order.”
