SpaceX Successfully Launches ISRO’s GSAT-N2 Communication Satellite

In a groundbreaking achievement for international space collaboration, SpaceX successfully launched the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) GSAT-N2 communication satellite on Tuesday from Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The satellite, which was carried aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, marks a pivotal moment in the expanding commercial partnership between ISRO and SpaceX, with plans for more joint ventures in the future.

Radhakrishnan Durairaj, Chairman and Managing Director of New Space India Limited (NSIL), the commercial arm of ISRO, confirmed that GSAT-N2, also known as GSAT-20, had been successfully placed in its designated orbit. This successful launch strengthens India’s communication infrastructure and solidifies ISRO’s position as a major player in global satellite communications.

What is GSAT-N2? GSAT-N2 is an advanced communication satellite developed collaboratively by ISRO’s Satellite Centre and the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre. With a significant data transmission capacity of 48 Gbps, the satellite is designed to provide enhanced broadband services and contribute to India’s growing need for nationwide in-flight connectivity. Continuing the legacy of the GSAT series, GSAT-N2 will play a crucial role in supporting India’s Smart Cities Mission, offering much-needed communication bandwidth for the development of urban hubs.

Expected to have a lifespan of 14 years, GSAT-N2 is equipped with 32 user beams, including 8 narrow spot beams focused on the Northeast region and 24 wide spot beams covering the rest of India. These beams will be supported by a network of hub stations across the country. The satellite’s high-throughput communication payload, utilizing Ka-Band HTS technology, will enable a throughput of around 48 Gbps, facilitating high-speed data transmission.

Why SpaceX Was Chosen for the Launch While ISRO has traditionally partnered with Arianespace, a French commercial satellite launch provider, for its heavy satellite missions, the GSAT-N2 launch marked a significant shift in ISRO’s approach. Due to limitations with its own LVM-3 launch vehicle, which can carry a maximum payload of 4,000 kg, ISRO opted to partner with SpaceX. With a payload capacity of 4,700 kg, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket proved to be the ideal choice for launching this communications satellite.

This successful launch underscores the growing strategic collaboration between ISRO and SpaceX, signaling a new phase of commercial space partnerships.
