The Karnataka government has declared a public holiday on Wednesday, closing all educational institutions and government offices, to honor the memory of former Chief Minister SM Krishna, who passed away at the age of 92 in the early hours of Tuesday. The distinguished leader’s final rites will be held in Maddur, his hometown, with full state honors.

In tribute to SM Krishna’s legacy, the state has announced three days of mourning. During this period, public entertainment activities have been suspended, and the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings as a mark of respect.

SM Krishna, a towering figure in Indian politics and governance, had been dealing with age-related health challenges and had been hospitalized several times in recent years. His family, along with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, is overseeing the preparations for the funeral, ensuring the ceremonies reflect the stature of his lifelong contributions.

PM Modi’s Heartfelt Condolences

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences to SM Krishna’s family and followers, recognizing the former leader’s impactful legacy. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi described him as a visionary and a tireless advocate for the development of Karnataka. “Shri SM Krishna Ji was a remarkable statesman who transformed Karnataka through his visionary leadership, particularly in infrastructure development. His wisdom, intellect, and compassion will be fondly remembered,” wrote PM Modi. The Prime Minister also reflected on his personal meetings with Krishna, expressing his deep sadness at the loss, and concluded, “Om Shanti.”

Nation Bids Farewell to a Leader

In light of SM Krishna’s passing, the Karnataka assembly session has been adjourned. Several national and state leaders are expected to gather in Maddur to pay their respects to the late leader. Known for his transformational vision, SM Krishna’s legacy will continue to inspire generations in Karnataka and beyond.
