New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed Parliament today, reaffirming India’s steadfast commitment to a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. He reiterated the importance of creating a “sovereign, independent, and viable Palestinian state” that can coexist peacefully with Israel, aligning with India’s long-standing position on the issue. Jaishankar also highlighted the need for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region, emphasizing India’s belief in dialogue and mutual understanding as essential tools for lasting peace.

Earlier in the day, proceedings in the Rajya Sabha were briefly disrupted and adjourned following remarks by BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi. Trivedi raised concerns about alleged external interference undermining India’s national interests, calling for a comprehensive investigation into the matter. His comments triggered protests from the opposition, leading to a temporary suspension of the session.

In parallel, the Lok Sabha witnessed debates on pressing developmental projects, including the expansion and privatization of airports, the state of national highways in Himachal Pradesh, and updates on the Sabarimala airport project. Members across party lines discussed the importance of these projects in enhancing infrastructure and regional connectivity, with some highlighting challenges such as land acquisition and environmental clearances.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also set to introduce the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, 2024, in the Lok Sabha. The bill seeks to strengthen the Disaster Management Act, 2005, by clearly defining roles, enhancing the authority of disaster management bodies, and incorporating lessons learned from past disasters. Among the proposed changes is the inclusion of provisions to address emerging challenges, such as climate change-related disasters and cyber threats, ensuring a more resilient framework.

The ongoing winter session of Parliament, which began on November 25, has seen robust debates on a wide range of issues, from legislative reforms to developmental projects. Scheduled to run until December 20, the session is expected to deliberate on several key bills and policy initiatives, providing an opportunity for meaningful discussions on India’s socio-economic priorities.
