Rahul Gandhi Demands Adani’s Arrest After US Indictment for Fraud and Bribery
New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday called for the immediate arrest of industrialist Gautam Adani following allegations by US prosecutors of bribery and fraud.
Addressing a press conference, Gandhi highlighted the accusations that Adani and his associates paid $250 million in bribes to Indian officials, violating both Indian and US laws.
“It is now clear that Gautam Adani has broken laws in both countries. He has been indicted in the US, yet he remains free in India. Why is he not being held accountable?” Gandhi questioned.
Demand for Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) Probe
Reiterating Congress’s demand for a JPC investigation, Gandhi emphasized the need for transparency in examining Adani’s transactions and alleged irregularities in his enterprises.
Meanwhile, Adani has dismissed the accusations, terming them “baseless.”
‘Adani Protected by Modi’: Gandhi’s Accusation
Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gandhi alleged that Adani enjoys immunity due to his close ties with the BJP.
“In India, Adani is untouchable because PM Modi shields him. While others face consequences for corruption, Adani roams free despite his involvement in a ₹2,000 crore scam,” Gandhi said.
He also mocked the BJP’s slogan of ‘Ek hain, safe hain’ by stating, “If Modi and Adani are together, they are indeed safe, but it’s at the cost of the nation.”
‘Investigations Should Start With Adani’
Responding to allegations from BJP leaders that the states mentioned in the US indictment were opposition-led during the alleged bribery, Gandhi supported investigations across all states but insisted they should begin with Adani.
“Arrest Adani, interrogate him, and let the trail lead wherever it may. Ultimately, the BJP’s funding nexus will be exposed, and PM Modi’s name will surface,” he asserted.
Parliament Push for Accountability
Gandhi promised to raise the issue in Parliament, calling it his responsibility as Leader of the Opposition. “India’s assets have been misused for personal gain. We will not let this issue rest,” he declared.
JPC and Regulatory Oversight
Gandhi also demanded the removal of Madhabi Buch from her regulatory role for an independent investigation. “The PM’s support for Adani is evident, and this compromises the integrity of any inquiry,” he added.
Global and Financial Repercussions
The indictment has shaken Adani’s conglomerate, with US prosecutors accusing him of a $265 million bribery scheme. Arrest warrants have been issued for both Adani and his nephew, Sagar Adani, with plans to involve foreign law enforcement.
The fallout has impacted Adani’s companies, with shares plummeting and Adani Green Energy canceling a $600 million bond sale amid the crisis.
Gandhi’s sharp criticism of the government and call for accountability have intensified political tensions as the controversy unfolds.
