New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi immersed himself in the holy waters of the Sangam—the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati—in Prayagraj on Wednesday morning during the Maha Kumbh. Dressed in a saffron jacket and blue track pants, with rudraksha beads in hand, he performed prayers and took multiple full-body dips in the river.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister toured the Sangam by boat, accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The Maha Kumbh has drawn millions of Hindu devotees from across the globe. However, this year’s event was marred by a tragic stampede a week ago, claiming 30 lives.

Massive crowds gathered along the riverbanks, jostling for a glimpse of the Prime Minister. Visuals showed thousands, possibly tens of thousands, of devotees witnessing his holy dip.

Modi’s visit comes at a politically significant time, as Delhi votes in a crucial Assembly election. His party, the BJP, is striving to unseat the ruling AAP government led by Arvind Kejriwal while also countering the Congress’ challenge. Before heading for his ritual bath, Modi posted on X, urging Delhiites to participate in the election: “I urge all voters to actively take part in this festival of democracy and cast their votes.”

The Prime Minister is the second senior BJP leader to take a ritual dip at this Kumbh. Last week, just two days before the stampede, Home Minister Amit Shah and his family also visited the religious gathering.

His trip follows a major developmental push in Prayagraj, where he recently inaugurated 167 projects worth ₹5,500 crore. The Maha Kumbh itself has received substantial investments in infrastructure, sanitation, security, and digital services.

Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk also attended the Kumbh, joining spiritual rituals, visiting the Lete Hanuman Mandir, and exploring the Digital Mahakumbh Experience Centre alongside the Chief Minister.
