PM Modi Pays Homage to Indira Gandhi on Her 107th Birth Anniversary
New Delhi: On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to India’s first woman Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, on her 107th birth anniversary. Sharing a message on X, the Prime Minister wrote, “Tributes to our former Prime Minister, Smt. Indira Gandhi Ji on her birth anniversary.”
Indira Gandhi, often called the ‘Iron Lady of India,’ was born on November 19, 1917, in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, into a Kashmiri Pandit family. She was the daughter of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Kamala Nehru.
Her birth anniversary also coincides with the observance of National Integration Day, which is celebrated annually on November 19. This day honours Gandhi’s significant contributions to the political, social, and economic growth of India.
As India continues its journey towards becoming a global power, National Integration Day serves as a reminder of Gandhi’s legacy in promoting unity within the nation. Instituted by the Indian National Congress in 1985, the day marks her relentless efforts in advancing national integration.
The observance is a time to reflect on India’s diverse culture and the collective efforts needed for national development. During her time as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984, Gandhi was known for her commitment to strengthening national unity.
One of her most defining moments was her leadership during the 1971 India-Pakistan war, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. Her strong vision and decisive actions during this period earned her a lasting legacy as a leader of immense resolve.
Indira Gandhi’s political career was characterized by her commitment to unifying people from all walks of life under a common national identity. Her leadership and policies continuously worked towards fostering unity and driving the country’s growth.
National Integration Day stands as a tribute to her lasting influence, celebrating her efforts to unite India in the face of significant challenges.
