NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Tuesday that this Diwali will be historic, as, after a 500-year wait, thousands of lamps will illuminate the temple at Ram Lalla’s birthplace in Ayodhya.

During the launch of development projects worth nearly ₹12,850 crore and the extension of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme to all senior citizens aged 70 and above, Modi remarked, “Many of us have seen many Diwalis, but this Diwali is truly historic.” An idol of Ram Lalla was consecrated at the Ayodhya temple in January of this year.

Modi added, “After 500 years, a unique Diwali awaits us as thousands of lamps will light up the temple of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya. This Deepawali marks the return of our Ram to his home once again—not after 14 years, but after 500.”

According to legend, Diwali celebrates the day when Lord Ram, the eldest son of Ayodhya’s King Dashrath, returned from 14 years of exile with his wife, Sita Devi, and brother, Lakshman. The people of Ayodhya celebrated their return by lighting diyas (earthen lamps) and using fireworks.

Earlier, Modi addressed a ‘Rozgar Mela’ where he distributed over 51,000 appointment letters for government jobs. He stated that this Diwali marks the first time Lord Ram will be seated in his grand temple in Ayodhya, fulfilling a long-awaited dream of many generations and honoring the sacrifices of those who worked toward this moment.
