New Delhi: The collision between a passenger ferry and an Indian Navy vessel off Mumbai’s coast left a tragic scene of chaos and despair, with survivors screaming for help amid the wreckage. The accident occurred when an Indian Navy craft, undergoing engine trials, lost control and struck a ferry traveling from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island. The incident claimed 13 lives while 99 people were rescued.

First responders described the scene as one of the most harrowing incidents they had ever faced. Among them was Arif Bamane, a rescuer who prioritized saving women and children. Responding to an urgent call from the control room, Bamane and his team, aboard a small boat, managed to rescue 20-25 individuals, including several foreign nationals. He recalled a heart-stopping moment when a young girl, unresponsive after inhaling water, regained consciousness following chest compressions.

Another rescuer, Iqbal Gothekar, described people frantically waving for help as they struggled to stay afloat. Piloting a tourist boat, Gothekar and his team rescued 16 passengers, bringing them safely back to the Gateway of India. “In my entire career, I’ve never witnessed anything so devastating,” he told PTI, recounting the haunting images of the disaster.

The tragedy has sparked discussions about maritime safety measures, highlighting the need for stricter protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
