New Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, has outlined his vision for making the judicial system more “approachable and user-friendly,” emphasizing the judiciary’s role as a critical yet independent pillar of governance. Speaking on his approach to justice delivery, CJI Khanna stressed that the judiciary’s duties extend beyond mere adjudication to being the guardian of constitutional rights and a provider of justice.
Khanna highlighted the urgency of addressing the massive case backlog and simplifying complex legal procedures. He also reiterated the importance of making litigation more affordable and accessible to all citizens. With an eye toward reducing trial durations, the new CJI aims to streamline the justice system to ensure the process is less burdensome for citizens.
In his address, Khanna described his approach as receptive, responsive, and self-evaluative, with a focus on reforming criminal case management. He emphasized that a fair justice delivery system should treat all individuals equally, regardless of their status, wealth, or power.
He affirmed the judiciary’s role as a protector of citizens’ rights, asserting, “It is our constitutional duty to ensure easy access to justice for all citizens of our great nation.”
Justice Khanna (64) took office as the 51st Chief Justice of India on Monday, succeeding Justice DY Chandrachud. His tenure is set to last until May 13, 2025. Known for his involvement in landmark cases, including the defense of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), the declaration of the Electoral Bonds scheme as unconstitutional, and his role in upholding the revocation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, Justice Khanna brings a wealth of experience to the role.
