Manipur Tribal Bloc Lifts NH-2 Blockade, Warns of Renewed Agitation

GUWAHATI: The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) announced the end of the economic blockade on National Highway-2 (NH-2) on Saturday night. The blockade, enforced since December 31, had disrupted vehicular movement, including the supply of essential goods into Manipur. CoTU declared that the total shutdown in Kangpokpi district would be lifted starting 2 am on Sunday.

NH-2, which connects Manipur to the rest of India via Nagaland, is a critical lifeline for the state. While lifting the blockade, CoTU also issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the state government, demanding the withdrawal of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) deployed in Saibol. The group alleged that these forces were being “controlled from the valley,” fueling tensions in the region.

Violence in Saibol Escalates Tensions

The confrontation at Saibol in Kangpokpi district on December 31 resulted in over 40 Kuki women sustaining injuries during a clash with central security forces. Local organizations claimed the women were protecting their “community bunkers,” which were reportedly dismantled by security personnel on allegations of being “illegal.”

CoTU strongly condemned the incident, highlighting what it described as “aggressive actions” by the security forces. In their statement, CoTU emphasized that their decision to lift the blockade followed an understanding with the authorities regarding the deployment of the 112 CRPF Battalion to Saibol under the Lhungtin sub-division.

Ultimatum to State Government

Despite the temporary resolution, CoTU warned of more intense protests unless the remaining CAPF stationed in Saibol are withdrawn within 48 hours. The group asserted that the deployment of CAPF, allegedly directed from the valley, undermines the tribal communities’ trust and autonomy.

“If our demand is not met, we will be left with no option but to intensify our agitation,” CoTU stated, signaling the possibility of harsher measures if their ultimatum is ignored.

Kangpokpi Violence and Rising Unrest

The tensions in Kangpokpi escalated further on Friday when a mob attacked the office of the district superintendent of police (SP). The clash left several policemen, including the SP, as well as civilians injured. The incident underscores the fragile law and order situation in the district and the simmering resentment among the tribal communities.

The withdrawal of the blockade offers a temporary reprieve for the state, as NH-2 is vital for the supply of essential commodities. However, with CoTU’s ultimatum looming and unresolved tensions, the state faces the challenge of preventing further unrest while addressing the demands of the tribal communities.

As the situation develops, stakeholders hope for a peaceful resolution to prevent further disruptions and violence in the troubled region.
