The Maharashtra government has announced a local holiday on Friday, December 6, to observe Mahaparinirvan Diwas, the death anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. BR Ambedkar. Known as the principal architect of India’s Constitution, Dr. Ambedkar is celebrated across the nation for his pivotal role in shaping modern India and championing the cause of social justice and equality.
Tribute to a Visionary Leader
On Thursday, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde paid tribute to Dr. Ambedkar by garlanding his statue at Thane’s Court Naka. The 69th Mahaparinirvan Diwas will also be commemorated at the Prerna Sthal in the Parliament House Complex. Organized by the Dr. Ambedkar Foundation under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the event will feature Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and other dignitaries offering floral tributes to honor Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy.
In addition to these official ceremonies, cultural and educational programs will be held across the country to educate people about Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions to the nation. Several community organizations are also hosting events focusing on his efforts to eradicate social discrimination and empower marginalized communities.
Chaityabhoomi: A Sacred Gathering
Chaityabhoomi in Mumbai’s Dadar, where Dr. Ambedkar was cremated, remains a focal point for thousands of followers who gather each year to pay their respects. The location holds profound significance, symbolizing Ambedkar’s enduring impact on Indian society. To accommodate the massive influx of visitors, the Railways has made special arrangements, including additional trains and extended services.
Local authorities have also made preparations to ensure a smooth and peaceful event. Facilities such as drinking water, medical assistance, and sanitation are being arranged for devotees at Chaityabhoomi. Security has been tightened with increased deployment of police personnel to manage the crowd and prevent any untoward incidents.
Remembering Dr. Ambedkar
Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, affectionately called Babasaheb, passed away on December 6, 1956. His relentless efforts to fight caste discrimination, promote education, and ensure equality continue to inspire millions. Posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1990, Ambedkar is remembered not just as the principal architect of the Indian Constitution but also as a symbol of resilience and progress for marginalized communities.
Mahaparinirvan Diwas: What’s Open and Closed?
Government Offices: State and semi-government offices in Mumbai and surrounding suburbs will be closed.
Liquor Shops: Alcohol sales will be prohibited as December 6 is designated a dry day.

Special Train Services
To facilitate the movement of people traveling to Chaityabhoomi, the Central Railway has announced 14 additional special trains from cities such as Aurangabad, Adilabad, Nagpur, and Solapur. These trains will terminate at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus on December 6. Furthermore, 12 extra suburban train services have been added to cater to local travelers. Extra Railway Police Force personnel have also been deployed to ensure passenger safety.
Traffic Restrictions
To manage the anticipated crowds, traffic restrictions will be in effect from December 5 to 7 around Chaityabhoomi. Veer Savarkar Road will remain closed to traffic between Siddhivinayak Temple Junction and Hinduja Hospital. Residents and commuters are advised to use alternate routes, including Pandurang Naik Road and Raja Badhe Chowk, to avoid disruptions. Parking arrangements have been made at designated areas to prevent congestion.
Broader Significance of Mahaparinirvan Diwas
Mahaparinirvan Diwas is more than just a day of remembrance; it is an occasion to reflect on Dr. Ambedkar’s vision for a just and equitable society. His contributions to the Indian Constitution laid the foundation for a democratic nation committed to liberty, equality, and fraternity.
The day also serves as a reminder of the importance of education and social reform. Various organizations across India hold discussions, seminars, and awareness drives to continue Dr. Ambedkar’s mission of eradicating caste discrimination and promoting inclusivity.
This solemn day not only honors the memory of Dr. Ambedkar but also encourages citizens to reaffirm their commitment to the principles he stood for—social justice, equality, and empowerment for all.
