Kerala Fireworks Accident Near Veerarkavu Temple: Over 150 Injured, 8 Critical

More than 150 people were injured, including eight in critical condition, following a fireworks accident during a temple festival near Neeleswaram in Kerala’s Kasaragod district late Monday night, as reported by PTI, citing local police. The accident is believed to have occurred when a fireworks storage facility near the Veerarkavu Temple caught fire around midnight.

The injured have been transported to hospitals across Kasaragod, Kannur, and Mangaluru. Senior district officials, including the collector and police chief, arrived at the scene as investigations began into the cause of the fire. Local communities are also rallying to support the victims and their families.

Reports indicate that five critically injured individuals are receiving treatment at the Kanhangad district hospital. Mathrubhumi reported that 33 people are at the district hospital, 19 at Aishal Hospital in Kanhangad, 12 at Arimala Hospital, 40 at Sanjeevani Hospital, 11 at Nileshwar Taluk Hospital, and five at Aster MIMS in Kannur. Some have also been taken to hospitals in Mangaluru and the Government Medical College in Pariyaram, Kannur.

Eyewitnesses told Mathrubhumi that the incident occurred during a fireworks display at the Moolamkuzhi Chamundi Theyyam festival, when a misfired cracker struck a building storing fireworks, igniting a large fire. Several bystanders, including women and children gathered for the festival, were injured.
