IMD Predicts Heavy Snowfall in Kashmir and Thunderstorms in Himachal Pradesh: Weather Alerts Issued

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy snowfall for Jammu and Kashmir this weekend, with the most intense snowfall expected from Saturday night through Monday morning. In addition to the snow, light to moderate rainfall is predicted in the surrounding plains, creating challenging conditions for the region.

In Himachal Pradesh, the regional meteorological centre in Shimla has issued a “yellow watch,” warning residents of thunderstorms, light rain, and squalls across several districts, including Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, Shimla, Kangra, Mandi, and Chamba, from January 4 to 6. The state is also expected to experience adverse weather, which could impact tourism, agriculture, and transportation.

Weather Disturbances

IMD scientist Naresh Kumar clarified that the active western disturbance over the western Himalayan region is triggering these weather patterns. “Light to moderate snowfall is expected across the western Himalayan region over the next 4-5 days, with heavy snowfall likely in Jammu and Kashmir on January 4 and 5. The adjoining plains may also see light to moderate rainfall,” he told ANI.

The latest IMD bulletin confirms widespread rainfall and snowfall over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad from January 4 to 6 and over Himachal Pradesh on January 5 and 6. Isolated heavy rainfall and snowfall are expected in these regions during this period.

Rising Temperatures in Kashmir

Nighttime temperatures in Kashmir have seen a slight rise, bringing some relief to residents. Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 4.5°C, up from minus 8.6°C the previous night. Similarly, Pahalgam registered minus 4.6°C, a small increase from its earlier low. Srinagar recorded minus 2.2°C, while Qazigund, at minus 7.3°C, remained the coldest location in the valley. Other areas, including Kupwara and Kokernag, recorded lows of minus 1.6°C and minus 5.5°C, respectively.

While these temperatures provide relief, residents remain concerned about the dense fog conditions that have affected daily activities in several parts of Kashmir and surrounding regions.

Impact on Transportation and Flight Operations

Srinagar airport’s operations were severely impacted by dense fog on Friday, reducing visibility to around 300 metres. This led to delays for several flights, and one flight was diverted to another airport. Flight services resumed around noon when visibility improved, with the first flight landing at 11:48 AM. Travelers are urged to stay updated on weather conditions before their journey.

In addition to air travel disruptions, dense fog has also created hazardous road conditions in several parts of northern India. Drivers are urged to exercise extra caution, particularly during early morning and late-night hours, when fog is thickest.

Fog and Smog Conditions in Other States

Delhi is expected to experience moderate fog and smog on Saturday, with the possibility of dense fog in isolated pockets during the morning. The temperature is predicted to range between 21°C during the day and 8°C at night. Conditions will be partly cloudy, and smog or shallow fog may return in the evening and night.

Dense fog is likely to affect parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh during the late-night and early-morning hours. The IMD has warned that fog may persist in Uttar Pradesh from January 7 to 9. Other regions, including Assam, Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, and Bihar, are also expected to see dense fog in isolated areas.

Unique Observations and Precautions

  • The current western disturbance is likely to strengthen, leading to localized disruptions in rural areas. Residents in mountainous regions should prepare for possible power outages, road blockages, and delays due to the heavy accumulation of snow.
  • Farmers in the affected regions should take precautions to protect crops from the expected rainfall or snowfall, especially in the plains surrounding the Himalayan regions, which could see disruptions in crop production.
  • Popular tourist destinations, such as Gulmarg, Shimla, and Manali, could see significant disruptions. Ski resorts may experience cancellations or delays, affecting the tourism sector. Visitors are advised to plan their trips accordingly and monitor weather updates closely.

Key Recommendations for Residents

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy snowfall or fog conditions.
  • Ensure emergency supplies, including warm clothing, food, and water, are available, particularly in regions prone to road blockages and snow accumulation.
  • Keep battery-operated lamps, heaters, and power banks on hand, as electricity disruptions may occur in some areas.
  • Regularly monitor weather updates from the IMD and local authorities, especially if you reside in high-altitude areas or places prone to heavy snow.
  • For drivers, ensure your vehicles are equipped with winter gear such as snow chains, antifreeze, and extra fuel to navigate challenging conditions.

With the western disturbance predicted to bring significant weather changes to northern India, the IMD urges everyone to stay informed and take necessary precautions. Whether for residents, travelers, or farmers, it is crucial to prepare for the coming days of challenging weather, as the region braces for snow, rain, and fog.
