BENGALURU: In support of Jagjit Singh Dallewal, a prominent farmer leader on a 52-day hunger strike in Punjab, Karnataka farmers have announced plans for a tractor rally on January 26. Kuruburu Shanthakumar, president of the Federation of Karnataka State Farmers’ Organizations, revealed that the rally would be held across district and taluk centres to express solidarity with Dallewal’s fight for a Minimum Support Price (MSP) guarantee law.

Dallewal, a leader of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, has been leading the protest at the Khanauri border in Punjab, demanding the implementation of the MSP guarantee law to ensure fair prices for farmers’ produce. His hunger strike has galvanized support from farmers nationwide, with 111 others joining the fast, declaring their readiness to sacrifice their lives for the cause.

Shanthakumar criticized the Central government for failing to uphold its promises to farmers. He recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier statements as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2014, where he had spoken about MSP, the Swaminathan report, and the struggles of farmers. “Now, he has forgotten those promises. This protest aims to remind him of his commitments,” Shanthakumar said.

He also accused the Central government of attempting to weaken the farmers’ movement by diverting its focus. He highlighted the interim report submitted on November 22 by the Nawab Singh Committee, a body led by a retired High Court judge and appointed by the Supreme Court. The report emphasized the urgent need to implement an MSP guarantee system for agricultural products, but the government has yet to take action.

At a farmers’ leaders’ meeting in Bengaluru on Thursday, a resolution was passed urging the President to direct the Central government to engage in talks with the fasting farmers. The resolution also outlined plans for awareness campaigns in villages, taluks, hoblis, and district centres to rally support for the cause.
