President Droupadi Murmu appointed Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the 51st Chief Justice of India on Thursday. Justice Khanna is expected to take oath on November 11, succeeding CJI D Y Chandrachud, who will retire on November 10.

A government notification stated, “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of India with effect from November 11, 2024.”

Justice Khanna will serve for a brief six months, retiring on March 13, 2025.

He graduated from Delhi University’s Campus Law Centre and began practicing law in 1983, mainly before the Delhi High Court. He was elevated to the bench of the Delhi High Court in June 2005 after serving as Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department and standing counsel for civil matters for the Delhi government.

Justice Khanna comes from a distinguished legal family. His father, Dev Raj Khanna, was a judge of the Delhi High Court, and his uncle, Hans Raj Khanna, was a senior Supreme Court judge who resigned after being passed over for the Chief Justice position during the Emergency.

In recent months, Justice Khanna has presided over Courtroom Number 2, where a life-size portrait of his uncle, Justice Hans Raj Khanna, is displayed.
