Justice Manmohan, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, bid an emotional farewell on Wednesday as he prepares to take up his new role in the Supreme Court. Reflecting on his journey, he reaffirmed his steadfast dedication to upholding justice and building public confidence in the legal system.
In his poignant address, Justice Manmohan emphasized that delivering justice goes beyond mere pronouncements of verdicts; it requires understanding the human stories behind every case with empathy and compassion. “I have seen the law’s incredible ability to heal wounds, correct injustices, and restore faith,” he remarked at the farewell ceremony, attended by his family, legal fraternity, and esteemed former judges, including Vipin Sanghi and Rajiv Sahai Endlaw.
Justice Manmohan expressed deep gratitude to the Delhi High Court, which he fondly described as his “home,” recognizing the significant role it played in shaping his judicial journey. “This court has been my purpose, my passion, and my foundation. As I transition to the Supreme Court, the Delhi High Court will forever hold a cherished place in my heart,” he remarked.
Justice Manmohan’s illustrious career spans decades. Born in 1962 to Jagmohan, a distinguished bureaucrat and politician, he pursued law at the University of Delhi and was designated a senior advocate in 2003. Appointed to the Delhi High Court in 2008, he has presided over numerous landmark rulings. These include decisions ensuring access to treatment for rare diseases, addressing digital inequities during the COVID-19 pandemic, and advocating for reforms in public infrastructure and environmental protection.
The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, recommended his elevation on November 28, citing his seniority, merit, and commitment to justice. His appointment was formally announced by the government on December 3.
Justice Manmohan’s tenure at the Delhi High Court is distinguished by rulings that significantly impacted public health, education, and governance. His efforts to bridge the digital divide during the pandemic, safeguard environmental resources, and streamline urban infrastructure reflect his focus on justice that serves the larger societal good.
