The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution advocating for the restoration of the region’s special status, urging the Government of India to engage with elected representatives of the Union Territory to explore constitutional means for reinstating these provisions. The move, however, sparked strong opposition from the BJP.

The resolution highlighted the importance of the special status and the constitutional protections that safeguarded the identity, culture, and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. It expressed deep concern over the unilateral revocation of these provisions and called for a restoration process that would uphold national unity while addressing the legitimate aspirations of the region’s populace.

Introduced by Surinder Choudhary, a National Conference legislator and Deputy Chief Minister, the resolution drew immediate criticism from BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition, Sunil Sharma. Sharma argued that the resolution was not part of the scheduled agenda and violated House rules.

The session quickly descended into chaos, with BJP members vocally opposing the resolution. Other legislators, barring those from the Congress, voiced their support. Notably, Jammu and Kashmir Congress leaders Tariq Karra and Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed refrained from participating in the debate.

Despite the BJP’s objections and attempts to halt the discussion, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather decided to proceed with a vote. As the BJP continued its protests, the resolution was passed through a voice vote. Enraged BJP members stormed the Well of the House, prompting the Speaker to adjourn the session.
