India Welcomes Israel-Hamas Ceasefire and Hostage Release Agreement

India expressed its support on Thursday for the agreement between Israel and Hamas, which includes a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized the importance of this step in ensuring a safe and sustained supply of humanitarian aid to Gaza’s civilians.

“We welcome the announcement of the agreement for the release of hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza. We hope this will lead to a safe and sustained supply of humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza,” read the MEA’s official statement.

Agreement Details and Timeline

As per Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the truce in Gaza is expected to begin on Sunday. A phased release of 33 Israeli hostages will also take place during this period. U.S. President Joe Biden confirmed that the ceasefire implementation would proceed step by step.

The Escalation and Ceasefire Hopes

The conflict erupted on October 7, 2024, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, leading to devastating retaliation. The intense warfare resulted in significant destruction in Gaza and a tragic loss of life. The ceasefire agreement now offers a glimmer of hope for peace in the region, although concerns about its long-term sustainability remain.

Continued Airstrikes Amid Ceasefire Talks

Despite the agreement, airstrikes by Israeli forces persisted until Wednesday evening, with 32 fatalities reported in Gaza City and northern Gaza. Local health officials estimate that over 46,000 lives have been lost since the conflict began.

Indian authorities hope that this ceasefire and humanitarian agreement will pave the way for lasting peace and relief for the affected civilians in Gaza.
