Indian Coast Guard Intercepts Major Drug Smuggling Operation in Andaman Waters
In what is believed to be its largest drug seizure to date, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) intercepted a fishing boat off the coast of the Andaman Islands, recovering approximately five tonnes of illicit drugs. Defence officials have confirmed the scale of the operation, marking a major breakthrough in India’s ongoing fight against narcotics trafficking.
“This is likely the biggest drug haul ever conducted by the Indian Coast Guard,” stated officials, though further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
This seizure is part of a broader, intensified effort by Indian anti-narcotics agencies to dismantle international drug cartels operating through the nation’s maritime routes. Earlier this month, a separate operation, ‘Sagar Manthan – 4,’ led to the confiscation of 700 kilograms of methamphetamine off the Gujarat coast. Eight Iranian nationals were arrested in connection with the seizure, which was carried out by the Indian Navy with assistance from maritime patrol assets.
The successful operation involved close coordination between the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the Indian Navy, and the Gujarat Police Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS). Union Home Minister Amit Shah lauded the operation, emphasizing the government’s dedication to combating drug trafficking and the efficient collaboration among various agencies.
To date, this year alone, India’s anti-narcotics agencies have seized over 3,500 kilograms of drugs trafficked through the seas. These efforts have led to the arrests of 11 Iranian nationals and 14 Pakistani nationals, all of whom are currently in custody awaiting trial. The ongoing crackdown highlights the critical role of maritime security in curbing transnational narcotics smuggling in the region.
