The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has made what is believed to be its largest-ever drug seizure, intercepting a fishing boat in the Andaman waters. According to defence officials, around five tonnes of drugs were seized during the operation, marking a significant success in the ongoing battle against narcotics trafficking.

“This is likely the biggest-ever drug haul by the Indian Coast Guard. Further details are awaited,” said the officials in a statement.

The operation is part of a larger crackdown by anti-narcotics agencies targeting drug cartels and smuggling activities. Earlier this month, a major bust led to the seizure of approximately 700 kilograms of methamphetamine (meth), with eight Iranian nationals arrested off the Gujarat coast. The operation, called ‘Sagar Manthan – 4,’ was based on intelligence inputs, and saw the Navy intercepting the vessel with help from maritime patrol assets.

The successful operation was a joint effort between the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the Navy, and the Gujarat Police Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS). Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the operation as a prime example of the government’s commitment and the seamless coordination between various agencies.

This year alone, anti-narcotics teams have seized 3,500 kilograms of drugs being trafficked through maritime routes, leading to the arrest of 11 Iranian and 14 Pakistani nationals across three separate cases. These individuals are currently in jail, awaiting trial.
