The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reaffirmed on Friday that India opposes illegal immigration, citing its connection to organized crime as a primary concern.
“For Indian nationals, whether in the United States or elsewhere, if they are overstaying or residing without proper documentation, we will facilitate their return once the necessary documents verifying their nationality are provided,” stated Randhir Jaiswal, the MEA spokesperson.
When asked about the number of Indian nationals being repatriated from the United States, Jaiswal clarified, “It is premature to discuss exact figures.”
Addressing concerns about ongoing discussions regarding the return of illegal immigrants from the U.S. and potential impacts on India’s trade and industrial relations, Jaiswal emphasized, “Illegal migration and trade are distinct issues. Our stance on illegal migration is unequivocal. We are firmly against it because it is often linked to organized crime.”
Foreign Secretary’s Visit to China
Jaiswal also spoke about the forthcoming visit of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to China, scheduled for January 26 and 27. “During this visit, the Foreign Secretary will meet his counterpart, the Vice Minister of China, to discuss all matters of bilateral interest,” he said.
He highlighted that the visit builds on prior agreements reached between leaders during the Kazan meeting and subsequent high-level discussions, including those between special representatives and foreign ministers. “We will provide a readout of the discussions after they occur, but the agenda will encompass all issues of mutual interest,” he added.
This dual focus on tackling illegal immigration and strengthening diplomatic engagements underscores India’s commitment to maintaining order and advancing international cooperation.
