External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar provided an update on India-China relations during a statement in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, emphasizing that the relationship has made significant progress in recent months. He reassured lawmakers that the Indian government remains committed to engaging constructively with China, with recent military and diplomatic discussions making headway in resolving border-related concerns. Jaishankar highlighted the successful implementation of the October patrolling agreement, which addresses key areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

While acknowledging the strain in bilateral ties since 2020, stemming from border tensions and aggressive actions by China, Jaishankar praised the resilience and professionalism of India’s armed forces. Despite logistical difficulties and the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indian military had been swift in responding to the situation and safeguarding national security, he said.

The Minister highlighted that India’s diplomatic efforts have steadily placed the two countries on a path of improved relations, with both sides now focused on fostering a fair and mutually acceptable framework for resolving border disputes. Jaishankar stressed that the successful disengagement phase along the LAC marks a key turning point, offering both nations the opportunity to shift focus towards de-escalation and the effective management of border areas.

Jaishankar further explained that the recent de-escalation measures have brought stability to the region, and both sides are now exploring ways to avoid future flare-ups. As tensions along the LAC had previously affected broader aspects of the bilateral relationship, the Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining a calm and controlled environment for enhancing overall India-China relations.

Looking ahead, Jaishankar outlined that the next priority would be to address the de-escalation of troop movements along the LAC. He confirmed that in a recent meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the two sides agreed to establish a high-level mechanism to further discuss the border issue. This mechanism, involving special representatives and foreign secretaries, is expected to convene soon, marking a continuation of the ongoing diplomatic dialogue.

Reaffirming India’s commitment to sustained and meaningful engagement, Jaishankar reiterated that a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable settlement of the border issue remains the top goal. He stressed that effective management of border areas, drawing from lessons learned over the past few years, will be crucial in ensuring long-term peace and stability. Jaishankar also outlined three key principles that should guide future efforts in managing the border region: maintaining peace and tranquility, ensuring mutual respect, and adhering to international norms.
