India and Indonesia have unveiled new measures to enhance cooperation in key sectors, including trade, defence, maritime security, and health. During talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region. The discussions emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and prosperity, along with ensuring freedom of navigation in international waters.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted Indonesia’s critical role as an important partner in the ASEAN and Indo-Pacific regions, underscoring both nations’ shared goals of regional stability. He further emphasized that both countries would work together in enhancing trade ties, focusing on diversifying trade baskets and improving market access. With bilateral trade expected to exceed $30 billion in 2024, the leaders agreed to boost cooperation in emerging sectors like fintech, AI, IoT, and digital infrastructure.

In defence, the two nations expressed a desire to work together in manufacturing and strengthening supply chains. Following the ratification of a defence cooperation agreement, Prabowo announced plans for a high-level defence delegation to visit India. Additionally, Indonesia and India agreed to bolster maritime security and counter-terrorism efforts, underscoring their commitment to regional safety.

The two countries also explored avenues for improving healthcare collaboration. Modi highlighted India’s experience in addressing healthcare challenges, such as the shortage of doctors and nurses in Indonesia, through initiatives like India’s public healthcare system and the mid-day meal scheme. Other areas of cooperation discussed included critical minerals, energy, space, and STEM education.

Cultural exchanges were also on the agenda, with Modi noting the successful conservation of Indonesia’s Borobudur Buddhist temple with India’s assistance. Going forward, India will also contribute to the conservation of Indonesia’s Prambanan Hindu temple.

This partnership is seen as a pivotal step towards a stronger, more integrated relationship between India and Indonesia, with the potential to shape the future of both nations and their role in the broader global community.
