India and the European Union (EU) are advancing efforts to establish a security and defence partnership aimed at addressing common challenges, including cross-border terrorism and critical infrastructure threats, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Friday.

Speaking at an event hosted by India’s World, Von der Leyen highlighted the growing strategic collaboration between India and the EU, emphasizing joint maritime security efforts and the potential for India to participate in European defence industrial projects.

The proposed partnership, she noted, would align with existing EU security arrangements with Japan and South Korea. It aims to enhance cooperation in cyber security, maritime security, and counterterrorism, while also contributing to economic security and stability.

India and the EU have already conducted joint naval exercises in the Gulf of Guinea, with a European military attaché posted in New Delhi for the first time. Talks are also underway to elevate security discussions to a higher level, establish a new strategic foreign policy dialogue, and strengthen homeland security collaboration.

Additionally, India has expressed interest in joining the EU’s Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) on defence projects, which would support its efforts to diversify military supply chains and develop advanced security capabilities.

Von der Leyen also underscored the global impact of conflicts, particularly the Russia-Ukraine war, and stressed the importance of international cooperation in maintaining stability. She reiterated that Europe’s increased defence spending and enhanced collaboration with key partners like India are crucial for addressing global security challenges.
