The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for southern India, forecasting heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh in the coming days. A low-pressure area is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal on Saturday, December 7, and move west-northwest, reaching the southwest Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka by December 12.
The low-pressure system is predicted to bring rainfall to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on December 11 and 12, followed by Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema on December 12.
The IMD’s latest update indicates a cyclonic circulation over the Equatorial Indian Ocean and the adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal, extending up to 3.1 km above sea level. As a result, a low-pressure area is expected to develop in the central south Bay of Bengal around December 7. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai anticipates light to moderate rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on December 8, with heavier rainfall expected on the following days:
- December 11: Heavy rainfall is expected in Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, and Ramanathapuram districts in Tamil Nadu, as well as Karaikal.
- December 12: Heavy rainfall is forecasted for Chengalpattu, Viluppuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram districts, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
Additionally, the IMD has predicted a new Western Disturbance impacting the Western Himalayan region and the adjoining plains of Northwest India, starting December 8.
IMD’s 7-Day Forecast:
- December 11-12: Heavy rainfall at isolated locations in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with similar conditions in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema on December 12.
- December 8-9: Light to moderate rainfall or snowfall is expected in the Western Himalayan region, with isolated light rainfall in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and western Uttar Pradesh.
- Dense fog: Likely to occur during late-night or early morning hours across Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura until December 9, and in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh from December 7 to 10. Dense fog is expected in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Bihar from December 8 to 10, while Himachal Pradesh may experience fog on December 10 and 11.
- Cold wave: Isolated regions in northern Rajasthan are likely to experience cold wave conditions from December 10 to 12.
