Hyderabad: University of Hyderabad Students End Protest After Supreme Court Stays Land Development

The University of Hyderabad Students’ Union (UoHSU) has ended its indefinite protest and class boycott against the Telangana government’s plan to develop a 400-acre land parcel near the varsity. The decision came after the Supreme Court intervened, staying any further activity on the land until further orders.

UoHSU Vice President Akash Kumar confirmed that students resumed attending classes on Friday following the court’s directive. The protest, which began on April 1, was driven by concerns over ecological conservation in Kancha Gachibowli.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court questioned the Telangana government’s urgency in clearing the land’s tree cover and ordered a halt to all activities related to the project. In response, the state government has decided to form a ministerial committee to engage with university officials, civil society groups, students, and other stakeholders to resolve the dispute.

Welcoming the court’s decision, UoHSU President Umesh Ambedkar asserted that the students would continue their efforts until the land auction plan is completely revoked and the entire parcel is formally registered under the university’s name.

Additionally, students have demanded the removal of police personnel from the East Campus and other parts of the university, with a petition already filed in the High Court to address this issue.
