Hyderabad Metro Rail is gearing up for a significant expansion to the northern regions of the city, fulfilling a long-awaited demand from residents of Secunderabad and neighboring areas. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has instructed the Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) to initiate the preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs) for this expansion.
HAML Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy made the announcement on Wednesday, stating that the Chief Minister has decided to extend the Metro to Medchal and Shameerpet as a special ‘New Year gift’ to the residents of northern Hyderabad.
At present, the Hyderabad Metro spans 69 km across three corridors: Miyapur-LB Nagar, Jubilee Bus Station-MGBS, and Nagole-Raidurg. The Phase 2 expansion plan includes five additional corridors, such as the Nagole-Chandrayangutta-RGIA (36.6 km), Raidurg-Kokapet Neopolis (11.6 km), MGBS-Chandrayangutta (7.5 km), Miyapur-Patancheru (13.4 km), and LB Nagar-Hayat Nagar (7.1 km), along with a proposed 40 km RGIA-Fourth City corridor.
According to N.V.S. Reddy, the Telangana government has green-lit the preparation of DPRs for two new corridors: Paradise-Medchal (23 km) and JBS-Shameerpet (22 km), which will be sent for approval to the Government of India as part of Phase-2 Part-B.
The announcement followed discussions between the Chief Minister, M. Danakishore (Principal Secretary of Municipal Administration), and N.V.S. Reddy. The Paradise to Medchal corridor will pass through key areas such as Tadband, Bowenpally, Suchitra Circle, Kompally, and Gundlapochampally. The JBS-Shameerpet corridor will cover prominent locations including Vikrampuri, Kharkhana, Lothukunta, and Bollaram.
The CM has instructed N.V.S. Reddy to consult Malkajgiri MP and BJP leader Eatela Rajender to gather input on the alignment of these new corridors before finalizing them. The DPRs are expected to be completed within three months, followed by state government approval.
CM Revanth Reddy emphasized that this Metro expansion will be a joint venture between the Central and State Governments, with proposals set to be submitted to the Government of India for final approval.
Sampath Reddy Mamidi from Medchal Metro Sadhana Samithi, a group that has been campaigning for the northern expansion of the Metro, expressed his gratitude: “After months of tireless advocacy and collective effort, the dream of Metro expansion to North Hyderabad has become a reality! This announcement addresses a critical need for our community.”
