IMD Issues Weather Alert for South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema, Cyclonic Activity Predicted

Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert predicting isolated heavy rains and thunderstorms across parts of South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema over the next three days. The regions are expected to receive significant rainfall, starting from November 11 through 14, as a result of an active weather system over the Bay of Bengal.

Key Districts Affected:

The following districts are likely to experience heavy rainfall and thunderstorms:

  • South Coastal Andhra Pradesh: Krishna, Guntur, Bapatla, Prakasam, Nellore, Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Konaseema, and West Godavari.
  • Rayalaseema: Tirupati, Annamayya, Chittoor.

Impact on Agriculture:

Farmers in these districts are advised to take necessary precautions to protect their crops, particularly as paddy harvesting is ongoing. Heavy rains could potentially disrupt agricultural activities, especially in fields where crops are near harvest. The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority has urged local authorities and residents to remain alert, advising them to prepare for possible flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions in rural areas.

Precautions for Farmers:

  • Paddy Harvesting: Farmers are advised to cover harvested crops to prevent damage from rain and wind.
  • Field Drainage: Ensure proper drainage in fields to avoid waterlogging, which could damage crops.
  • Livestock Protection: Farmers should also take steps to protect livestock from heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

Cyclonic Activity Over Bay of Bengal:

The IMD has reported the presence of a cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal, extending up to 5.8 km above sea level. This system is expected to develop into a low-pressure area, which will gradually move westward towards the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. The evolving system will continue to influence weather patterns across southern India, including rainfall, thunderstorms, and possible lightning strikes.

Additionally, a trough extending from the southwest Bay of Bengal to the east-central Bay of Bengal is contributing to unstable weather in the region. This trough is affecting atmospheric conditions up to 1.5 km above sea level, enhancing the likelihood of heavy rains.

Weather Outlook for Southern States:

  • Tamil Nadu and Kerala (November 12-15): The low-pressure system is expected to bring heavy rains, thunderstorms, and lightning to Tamil Nadu and Kerala, particularly along the coastal regions.
  • Coastal and South Interior Karnataka (November 14): Heavy rainfall is also expected in parts of coastal and South Interior Karnataka, with the possibility of local flooding in low-lying areas.
  • Dense Fog in Northwest: Dense fog is forecasted to affect parts of northwest Rajasthan, West Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh over the next few days, which could disrupt travel and visibility.

Safety and Preparedness:

  • Travel Precautions: Travelers in affected regions should exercise caution due to reduced visibility, especially on roads and highways. Air and rail traffic could also face delays.
  • Flood Watch: Local authorities are advised to monitor water bodies for rising levels, as heavy rains may lead to flash floods in vulnerable areas.
  • Health Safety: The public should avoid venturing outdoors during thunderstorms and take shelter from lightning.

The IMD continues to closely monitor the situation and will issue further updates as the low-pressure system develops. Local authorities are urged to remain vigilant and implement flood management strategies in anticipation of heavy rains.
