On October 29, 2024, business operations in Afzalgunj, Hyderabad, came to a halt as Muslim traders and business owners observed a bandh to condemn the inflammatory remarks made by controversial preacher Yati Narsinghanand Saraswati about Prophet Muhammad.

The bandh was spearheaded by Tahreek Muslim Shabban (TMS) in collaboration with various community groups and activists. Shops and commercial establishments across Afzalgunj remained shut throughout the day, with traders voicing their anger over the absence of action against Narsinghanand’s offensive comments.

The impact of the protest extended beyond Afzalgunj, as businesses in prominent areas like Charminar and Siddiamber Bazaar also participated in the closure. “The statements made against Prophet Muhammad are deeply offensive and unacceptable. It’s frustrating that no action has been taken so far. We urge the Telangana government to intervene and address this matter urgently,” one of the traders remarked.

The protest was peaceful, with traders urging others in nearby markets to join the bandh as a show of solidarity. Mustaq Mallik, a representative of TMS, had previously called on the community to express their dissent by closing businesses until the evening of October 29. He also appealed to khateebs at mosques to raise awareness about the issue during Friday sermons, rallying support for the cause.
