A recent Canadian commission report has found “no definitive link” between India and the killing of Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, contradicting earlier claims made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The 123-page report, titled Public Inquiry Into Foreign Interference in Federal Electoral Processes and Democratic Institutions, was released on Tuesday and stated that no foreign state’s involvement in Nijjar’s killing had been proven, according to news agency PTI.

However, the report also accused India of interfering in Canadian elections—an allegation India has firmly rejected. In response, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) dismissed the claims, stating that it is Canada that has been interfering in India’s internal matters, leading to issues such as illegal migration and organized crime. The MEA reiterated that India rejects the report’s insinuations and urged Canada to take responsibility for its policies.

India-Canada Diplomatic Rift

Tensions between the two nations escalated after Justin Trudeau accused India of being involved in Nijjar’s assassination, claiming Canada had evidence of Indian agents’ involvement. India strongly refuted these allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot dead outside a Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18, 2023, sparking controversy and diplomatic fallout. In October 2024, Canada expelled six Indian diplomats, prompting India to take reciprocal action by expelling six Canadian diplomats and withdrawing its high commissioner.

The dispute further strained bilateral relations, with both countries facing challenges in restoring diplomatic dialogue amid ongoing tensions.
