KT Rama Rao Appears Before Telangana ACB Amid Formula-E Race Probe, Raises Concerns Over Rights and Evidence Planting

BRS leader KT Rama Rao (KTR) appeared before the Telangana Police Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities surrounding the Formula-E race held in Hyderabad. KTR has strongly denied the allegations, describing the probe as politically motivated and claiming that there is an “attempt to plant evidence” against him.

Allegations and the Case Background

The case revolves around accusations of unauthorized payments, including foreign currency transactions, during KTR’s tenure as Municipal Administration Minister in the previous BRS regime. The payments were allegedly made without the required approvals, resulting in a reported loss of ₹55 crore to the government exchequer. The FIR, filed under the Prevention of Corruption Act and sections of the IPC, accuses KTR of criminal misconduct, breach of trust, and conspiracy.

The Formula-E race, touted as a landmark event to boost Hyderabad’s global reputation, has become the center of controversy, with critics questioning the transparency of the financial dealings involved. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also summoned KTR for questioning on January 7, further intensifying the political turmoil.

KTR’s Defense and Concerns Over Rights

Ahead of his appearance, KTR expressed concerns about the integrity of the investigation, alleging that authorities might raid his residence and fabricate evidence. “My home may be raided, and there is an attempt to plant evidence,” he told reporters, adding that he had come forward as a law-abiding citizen respecting the High Court’s directive.

However, KTR accused the ACB of denying him fundamental rights during questioning, including the presence of his legal counsel. “As a citizen, I am entitled to have my lawyers present with me. Unfortunately, the ACB seems to have a different opinion,” he said, calling the move a violation of his constitutional rights.

Legal and Political Implications

The Telangana High Court had earlier granted KTR interim protection from arrest until a verdict is issued on his petition seeking to quash the FIR. Legal experts believe the case could set a significant precedent for how political leaders are held accountable in corruption investigations.

Meanwhile, the case has sparked a political firestorm in Telangana. Opposition parties, including the BJP and Congress, have seized the opportunity to accuse the ruling BRS government of systemic corruption. BJP leaders have called for a broader investigation into other projects undertaken during KTR’s tenure, while Congress leaders have demanded greater transparency and accountability in the state’s governance.

Supporters Rally Around KTR

Despite the allegations, KTR has received widespread support from his party and grassroots workers. Hundreds of BRS supporters gathered outside the ACB office on Monday, holding placards and chanting slogans in solidarity with the leader. Security was tightened in and around the area to prevent any disruptions.

Party workers believe the investigation is an orchestrated attempt to tarnish KTR’s image ahead of the state elections. “KTR has always worked for the development of Telangana. This is nothing but a political vendetta,” said a senior BRS leader.

Broader Concerns Over Governance and Accountability

The Formula-E controversy has brought to the forefront broader concerns about governance and the use of public funds in Telangana. Critics argue that the case reflects the need for stricter safeguards against corruption and greater oversight of high-profile projects.

KTR, however, defended the Formula-E race, emphasizing its significance in promoting Hyderabad as a global city for motorsports and sustainable technology. “The event brought international attention to Hyderabad and showcased our ability to host world-class events. It’s unfortunate that baseless allegations are being used to derail progress,” he said.

What Lies Ahead

As the investigation continues, analysts predict the outcome could have a lasting impact on Telangana’s political landscape. KTR’s legal battle, along with the ED’s impending questioning, could shape the narrative for the BRS party’s election campaign. The controversy has also drawn national attention, with commentators closely monitoring its implications for the state’s governance and the future of the Formula-E initiative in India.

For now, all eyes are on the Telangana High Court’s next move and whether KTR’s claims of political vendetta will resonate with voters or backfire against the ruling BRS. The incident has not only escalated tensions within the state but also raised critical questions about the integrity of public administration and the politicization of corruption probes.
